The Biological and Environmental Science and Engineering (BESE) Division is an enabling platform and intellectual space for knowledge and advanced technology in the field of Adaptive Biology and Environmental Systems.
 
BESE Division beyond the well established genomics, high throughput proteomics, bioinformatics and imaging laboratories, offers also a unique and most advanced technological academic environment, where contemporary life science high-complexity vision of biology mechanisms is shared and blended with other disciplines including mathematics, computational science, engineering, physics and chemistry.
 
Access to the some of the most advanced equipment in the world for genomics, proteomics, epigenetics, advanced micr oscopy , structural biology, and nanofabrication studies as well as access to the Red Sea, provides KAUST faculty, students and staff with unique opportunities. This combined with the University’s cutting edge research projects in the experimental laboratories, enables research unconstrained by physical resources to address fundamental issues in biology and environmental sciences.

- Marine Sciences

The Biological and Environmental Sciences and Engineering (BESE) Division at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) invites qualified applicants to help increase its strength in Marine Science, with the aim of recruiting two outstanding Faculty at the levels of Assistant and Associate Professor to be also affiliated with the Red Sea Research Center at KAUST.
 
Candidates must have a proven track record of excellence in marine science and a strong and original research program. The extension/development of research programs spanning from fundamental research questions to advanced knowledge in applied problems relevant to the Red Sea is anticipated. In particular, candidates are expected to add to the RSRC Mission to “contribute to the understanding of the role, functioning and response to pressures of the global ocean by using the unique opportunities offered by the Red Sea”. Expertise/achievements in the following research areas will be of particular interest: tropical marine ecosystems, marine environmental chemistry, biogeochemistry and metabolomics, and marine spatial modeling and planning.

Plant Science

The Biological and Environmental Science and Engineering (BESE) Division at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) invites qualified applicants to help increase its strength in Plant Science, with the aim of recruiting outstanding Faculty at the levels of Full, Associate and Assistant Professor

Candidates will need to have a proven track record of excellence in plant science and a strong and original research program. Achievements in the following areas will be of particular interest: bioinformatics, genomics, genetics and breeding. Given the long-term emphasis of the plant science program at KAUST is to address issues related to increasing abiotic stress tolerance of crops, directing research towards this area of study is therefore desirable.

Biomolecular Engineering and Microbiology

King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) is seeking a highly motivated and skilled faculty member whose research preferably focuses on development of optimized bacterial and/or microalgal cell factories for technology applications suitable for Saudi Arabian region. Strong background in microbiology, metabolic engineering and genomics is required, as well as proven track record in technology development and commercialization.

The successful applicant is expected to develop strong research in the above defined domain. The faculty member will be part of the Computational Bioscience Research Center (CBRC) and affiliated with Biological and Environmental Science and Engineering (BESE) Division. The position will remain open until filled.

PhD or equivalent in a relevant discipline. Candidates should be well-established within the research field. They should demonstrate original research and experience at the highest international level.

 

- Synthetic Biology

King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) is seeking a highly motivated and skilled faculty member whose research focuses on synthetic biology, genome editing and genome engineering aimed at industrial biotechnology applications.

The successful applicant is expected to develop strong research in synthetic biology, genome editing and genome engineering of microbial organisms. Candidates with experience in associated fields are encouraged to apply. The faculty member is also expected to establish an experimental laboratory. The faculty member will be part of the Computational Bioscience Research Center (CBRC) and affiliated with Biological and Environmental Science and Engineering (BESE) Division. The position will remain open until filled.

Metabolic Engineering

King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) is seeking a highly motivated and skilled faculty member whose research focuses on metabolic pathway design, optimization, simulation, and engineering aimed at industrial biotechnology applications. 

The successful applicant is expected to develop strong research in engineering of metabolic pathways and networks of microbial organisms. The faculty member is also expected to establish an experimental laboratory. The faculty member will be part of the Computational Bioscience Research Center (CBRC) and affiliated with Biological and Environmental Science and Engineering (BESE) Division. The position will remain open until filled.

Postdoctoral openings

- Research Fellows in Structural and Molecular Biology

- Large multi-domain proteins, protein-nucleic acid complexes;
- Protein structure and dynamics determined by the cutting-edge NMR techniques.

Description:
The research of the group is focused on atomic-level insight into essential and topical questions of biochemistry and molecular medicine. The candidate for the postdoctoral position should be able to carry out interdisciplinary projects to study the structural and dynamic properties of multidomain proteins and their complexes. We are seeking for highly motivated postdoctoral fellows with an extensive experience in the protein biochemistry and biophysical methods used for characterization of proteins and to study protein-protein interactions. The key experimental technique used and developed in the lab to tackle challenging macromolecular assemblies is the biomolecular nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. Depending on the interests and skills, a candidate will have an opportunity to expand expertise in various biophysical methods relevant to state-of-the-art Integrated Structural Biology, with a particular emphasis on the solution, solid-state NMR spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography, cryo-EM, molecular dynamics simulations.

Requirements:
Applicants must have a Ph.D. in biochemistry or a related field. The positions require the extensive experience in the bacterial expression systems (E.coli) and purification of recombinant proteins, and a good knowledge of biophysical methods and molecular biology techniques. Moreover, excellent oral and written communication skills in English, effective judgment and problem solving with little or no supervision, a high motivation and commitment to the academic research. Additional experience in the structural biology will be regarded as an advantage.

- Research Fellows in Structural and Molecular Biology

- Bio-inspired and self-assembly materials;
- Intrinsically disordered and flexible proteins.

Description:
The candidate for the postdoctoral position should be able to carry out interdisciplinary projects to study the structural and dynamic properties of Intrinsically Disordered Proteins (IDPs) and their complexes. I am seeking for highly motivated postdoctoral fellows with an extensive experience in the protein biochemistry and biophysical methods used for characterization of proteins and to study protein-protein/peptide interactions. My interdisciplinary research group is focused on the designing and physicochemical and structural characterization of novel peptide/protein-based bio-inspired materials (hydro-gels, aggregates), inhibitors of protein interactions, aggregation, and liquid-liquid protein phase separation. Depending on the interests and skills, a candidate will have an opportunity to expand expertise in various biophysical methods relevant to state-of-the-art Integrated Structural Biology, with a particular emphasis on the solution, solid-state NMR spectroscopy, and X-ray crystallography, cryo-EM, molecular dynamics simulations (MD).
