KAUST 5 Year Anniversary Open Houses

On September 3 and 4 the KAUST Community had the opportunity to participate in the Open Houses organized in the context of the 5 Year Anniversary. It was an invitation for all the members of the community to visit the academic campus, meet with our Faculty, researchers and students, and see first hand some of the research done in the University.

On September 3 the academic campus had special guests from The KAUST School. Students from Grade 6 to 12 came to tour the labs and departments to learn more about the University. On September 4 there was an open day for all the KAUST Community with several lab tours and many interesting displays showcasing the work done in many research areas at KAUST.

The BESE Division participated with several displays with many exciting topics about the work done at the Division:  

Water Desalination and Reuse Center

The WDRC welcomed all members of the KAUST Community to see and learn about key approaches to the sustainable use, and reuse, of the Kingdom’s precious water resources. A tour of the laboratory facilities showcased technologies for removing salt from seawater and for treating wastewater so that it can be used again for other purposes. Visitors of all ages enjoyed a practical demonstration of how membranes can be used to filter water and make it safe to drink.

Red Sea Research Center

The RSRC invited the KAUST Community to learn about new discoveries arising from explorations of the undersea world just offshore from our campus. KAUST marine scientists explained some of their projects dealing with the mysterious habits of creatures such as whale sharks, corals, plankton and even bacteria. They also showcased some of the equipment and samples of stony corals and anemones. 

The RSRC display received the special visit of first grade children from The KAUST School. The children learned a lot about beautiful and diverse community of organisms that make up the Red Sea. They were able to see live anemones in the microscope, have a close look at some of the amazing equipment CMOR has to offer and learn about many of the organisms leaving in the Red Sea, including whale sharks.

Center for Desert Agriculture

How can we feed the 9 billion people expected to live on the earth by 2050? How can crop plants be adapted to produce food in harsh environments like Saudi Arabia, where fresh water is scarce? The Center for Desert Agriculture does research aimed to address these questions, and during the Open Houses they presented some of their research to the KAUST Community.

The visitors were able to see first hand some of the experiments performed by Plant Researchers, and how this research is applied to plants that are very familiar to us such as tomato, barley and rice. The people from the Community were able to enter the lab and see plant growth chambers and some examples of the experiments to make plants tolerant to saline water, heat and drought conditions.

Human Brain Visualization

The human brain consumes only 20 watts of power, similar to a dim light bulb, but its computational power exceeds any of today’s megawatt-consuming supercomputers. How do the brain’s neuronal structures make this energy efficiency possible? The laboratory of Prof. Pierre Magistretti invited the KAUST Community to explore a 3D simulation of brain cells and the blood vessels that feed them. This research aims to help us understand the structure of neural microcircuits and how they are powered, which may lead to advances in cognitive science as well as computer design.
