Prof. Raquel Peixoto receives 2025 ICRS Mid‑Career Scientist Award

21 July, 2025

Professor of Marine Science Raquel Peixoto has been awarded the 2025 International Coral Reef Society (ICRS) Mid‑Career Scientist Award. This prestigious award honors researchers 10–20 years post‑PhD for exceptional contributions to coral reef science.

A nationally and internationally recognized leader, Prof. Peixoto has advanced the field of coral microbiome science and led innovative reef restoration initiatives. Her work has significantly enhanced understanding of how microbial ecosystems can bolster coral resilience in the face of climate change, paving the way for scalable conservation strategies.

Prof. Peixoto reflected on the distinction:

“I’m deeply honored to receive the International Coral Reef Society Mid‑Career Scientist Award in the year I mark 20 years since completing my Ph.D.—making this recognition especially meaningful. It comes from the only global scientific society dedicated entirely to coral reefs, and from peers whose work I deeply admire. This award reinforces the importance of collaborative science and the role of microbiomes in building reef resilience. I hope it also inspires the next generation of coral scientists to pursue bold, solution‑oriented research for our oceans.”

This award highlights KAUST’s status as a hub for marine science and underscores Saudi Arabia’s increasing leadership in global scientific innovation.
