Carlos M. Duarte, Distinguished Professor of Marine Science at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST), has been awarded a Doctor Honoris Causa by the University of Algarve in recognition of his pioneering contributions to marine science and ocean sustainability.

The honorary degree was conferred on March 2 during a ceremony at the Gambelas Campus in Faro, Portugal. Academic leaders and researchers gathered to celebrate Duarte’s impact on global marine science.

“Receiving this honorary doctorate is a deep personal honor, and it reflects the strong collaborations I have had with colleagues and students here in the Algarve,” said Professor Duarte.

The proposal for the honorary doctorate originated from the university’s Faculty of Science and Technology and was approved unanimously by the Academic Senate, recognizing Duarte’s globally influential scientific career and contributions to addressing major environmental challenges.

“Carlos Duarte’s work has transformed the way we understand coastal ecosystems and their role in climate mitigation,” remarked the Rector of the University of Algarve.

During the ceremony, speakers highlighted Duarte’s research on seagrasses, mangroves, and salt marshes, which helped establish the concept of blue carbon, showing how marine ecosystems capture and store carbon to combat climate change.

Duarte also reflected on his long-standing connection with the Algarve region, which dates back to the early 1980s. Over the years, collaborations with researchers at the university and the Centre of Marine Sciences (CCMAR) have resulted in numerous joint publications and training opportunities for graduate students and postdoctoral researchers.

At KAUST, Duarte continues to lead research exploring how marine ecosystems can contribute to climate resilience and sustainable development. The honorary doctorate recognizes both his scientific achievements and his global leadership in advancing ocean-based solutions to planetary challenges.
