The Journal of Ecology has recognized Fernando Maestre, BESE Professor of Environmental Science and Engineering, as its Eminent Ecologist for 2024. This prestigious honor celebrates his extensive contributions to the field of ecology and his pioneering work on the ecology of drylands and their responses to global environmental change.
In celebration of this recognition, Maestre curated a Virtual Issue of the journal, highlighting key publications that have profoundly shaped our understanding of biotic interactions, biocrust ecology, and large-scale observational studies across regional and global gradients. Through a blog series accompanying the issue, he reflects on the circumstances behind these publications and shares personal anecdotes and lessons learned throughout his career. Maestre also sat down with Executive Editor of the Journal of Ecology, Richard Bardgett, for an interview to discuss his career journey, the role of ecological research in decision-making, and advice for aspiring ecologists.
Maestreās career has earned him numerous accolades, including the National Research Award from the Spanish Ministry for Science and Innovation in 2022, recognition as a distinguished scientist by the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and election to the Royal Spanish Academy of Sciences as an Academician in 2023.
Reflecting on this recognition, Maestre shared: "It is an incredible honor to receive this award. It inspires me to continue advancing our understanding of dryland ecosystems and their critical role in the face of global environmental change."
