Giving coral reefs a fighting chance for survival

Scientists are sounding the alarm: coral reef restoration is not a distraction, but a crucial weapon in the battle against climate change and other threats to these vital ecosystems. While some critics question the effectiveness of restoration efforts, a recent paper published in Nature Climate Changeargues that dismissing restoration undermines a key component of coral reef conservation. 

The authors — a group of leading experts in the field including lead authors Professors Raquel Peixoto and David Suggett from KAUST — acknowledge the challenges of restoring damaged reefs, particularly in the face of ongoing climate change. However, they stress that restoration plays a vital role, particularly in responding to smaller-scale localized disturbances.
